Unique Characteristics

Keene State students believe in getting involved.  Are you ready to step up?  Last year: 5,000 energetic students = 400,000 hours of credited student service + 17,000 hours of volunteer community service.

Student energy by the megawatt goes into 100+ student-run organizations on campus.  Students set their own agendas, fund-raise with enthusiasm, work within a budget, recruit their friends, and accomplish amazing things.

Advice from the pros (upperclassmen): “My advice to new students is to do things that take you out of your comfort zone – things you can look back on in 10 years and say, ‘Wow. That was cool.”

“Don’t sit home on Facebook. If your days are packed, it’s a good sign.  And be sure to have fun.”

Travel. Global education takes students into educational settings from Africa to Peru to Europe, and draws international students to Keene for true cross-cultural experiences.  Full-time students who have completed 15 credits at KSC are eligible for study-away programs.

More than half of all classes have fewer than 20 students, and only 1% have more than 50 students.

You are not a sponge. We know that. We know you can’t sit passively in a classroom and simply absorb information. (That sounds boring, doesn’t it?).Keene State is a hands-on college. The buzzword is “experiential education,” but it simply means getting involved, jumping into new opportunities, working with others for the greater good.  What you get out of a Keene State education depends on what you put in.

Keene State is not your grandmother’s teachers college. We still graduate many teachers – in fact, the most certified teachers of any college in the state of NH.  But Keene State today has more than 40 other majors, truly distinctive programs that might have dazzled the 27 young women in the school’s first class in 1909.  Newest, coolest, and most highly declared majors include: Nursing, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Sustainable Product and Design, Women’s and Gender Studies, Architecture, Environmental Studies, Psychology, Geography, Film Studies, Health Promotion and Wellness, Theatre and Dance.

All first-year students take Integrative Studies seminars that focus on communication and analytical skills.  You might take History of Jazz, Baseball Through the Years, or Food, Health, and the Environment. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 18 to 1, access to your professors is immediate and easy.

Are you an exceptional student? You may be invited to apply to the Honors program, which includes a mandatory study-abroad component in your sophomore year.

Keene State’s Residence Hall Organization won “School of the Year” recognition in 2011 from the Northeast Association of College and University Residence Halls for innovative, student-led programs that strive to create “the ultimate residence hall environment and experience.”
